The closest métro station is "Voltaire" which is one block away, on the Place Léon Blum (pictured). Just down the street is the beautiful Père Lachaise cemetery (pictured below) and you are a 10 minute walk from the Marais district (in one direction) and 10 minutes (in the other direction) from the Oberkampf area (with great bars and cafés).
Just 1/2 block away, there are the small shops where you can do your daily shopping (boulangerie, cheese shop, butcher, fruits/veggies, etc.), and there are two supermarkets on the Place Léon Blum, one block away.
You can also walk 10 minutes straight down the Rue de la Roquette and end up at Place de la Bastille, one of Paris's cultural focal points and home to the city's modern opera house.

There are two open markets within easy walking distance:The Marché d'Aligre, famous for its diverse culture and Arab flair. It's a great place for inexpensive groceries, or just sit in a café sipping a thé a la menthe (mint tea) and watch the crowds.
Just off the Place de la Bastille is the Marché Richard Lenoir, a more upscale market with beautiful fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and just about everything else.
